Ectopic pregnancy is where the egg implants outside the uterus, generally in the fallopian tubes. The pregnancy usually isn’t viable and if it is both mother and baby are at risk of not making it through the pregnancy.
A blighted ovum the egg attaches to the wall but the baby doesn’t form. Cells develop to form the pregnancy but not the baby herself. A high level of chromosomal abnormalities generally cause the woman to miscarry naturally.

Yes you are safe unless you bleed through a pad in less than an hour and then you should go to the hospital for an emergency D&C. A blighted ovum is an zygote that has chromosomal abnormalities and is therefore absorbed into the lining of your uterus. The yolk and sac start to develop normally and they produce hormones for a while which make your body and preg tests think you are pregnant, but once it registers that no baby is growing they stop producing hormones and you start to miscarry. I had this happen and there is nothing to worry about. An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that implants into the fallopian tube and when it grows, it can rupture your tube and cause internal bleeding and possibly death. The two things are not really related.

Ectopic pregnancy is a complication of pregnancy in which the fertilized ovum is developed in any tissue other than the uterine wall. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the Fallopian tube but implantation can also occur in the cervix and ovaries. An ectopic pregnancy is a medical emergency, and, if not treated properly, can lead to death.
Blighted ovum is a pregnancy in which the very early pregnancy appears normal on an ultrasound scan, but as the pregnancy progresses a visible embryo never develops.
