What Are The Chances Of Me Getting A Positive Pregnancy Test?

Ok… I’ve been having a few symptoms that suggest I might be pregnant, me and my husband are TTC so that’s great! Anyways my AF isn’t due until Sun so I know it’s a little early to do a pregnancy test really but the suspense is killing me! What do you think the chances are of a pregnancy test showing up positive (if I am pregnant) if I took one now, 4 days before my period is due? Or do you think it is more likely to show negative until a few days?

Well First Response is supposed to tell you 5 days before your missed period, so you could try that! :) I think the closer to your missed period you wait, the better, but I know the suspense is killing you! Good luck!!

In any given month, you only have about a 20% chance of getting pregnant (and that assumes you’ve done the baby dance at the right time). You can think of it like this… only about 1 in 4 eggs are good. The other three, even if fertilized, will not properly implant and grow into a baby. So each month, not only do you have to time the baby dance correctly, but this has to also be a month that you are ovulating a “good” egg (this description may not be scientifically perfect, but gets the point accross).
So every month, the odds are against you getting pregant.
Add to that the fact that HPT manufacturers even give statistics on how well they work when taken early. The last time I looked at one of those statistics, it indicated that if you are pregnant and take a test 4 days early, you only have about a 50% chance of gettting a BFP.
So adding those two things together tells me that you only have about a 10% chance of getting a BFP if you test now.

It depends on when you ovulated.
(Good) HPTs & blood tests can detect pregnancy as early as 2 days after implantation. Implantation takes 6-12 days. Meaning you can theoretically test 8-14 days past ovulation and get a positive test.
However, your HCG lvls have to be high enough to register. If the placenta is producing low levels, can take a long time for the test to turn positive.
HCG lvls double every 2-3 days. Retest every few days until you are satisfied with the results.
It’s hard to say what your odds are without knowing your estimated time of ovulation.
If you ovulate mid month and have a normal 28 day cycle, I would say that there’s a very slight chance of getting a positive test at this point. You would be about 10 dpo so I would give you a <10% chance of getting a positive.
Always always always use a name brand test. Consumer Reports rated First Response #1 in HPTs.

  4. Not A Supermum! Says:

You can get a First Response one which ‘may’ be able to read a positive up to 5 days before you period is due – but it’s expensive, and it’s not guaranteed. Even if you are pregnant, it’s possible it won’t detect it yet. By all means, try it if you really can’t wait, but don’t be too disheartened if it’s negative, it just means you’ll have to try again in a few days!

With my last pregnancy, I took about 10 tests before I was even late… the suspence was just KILLING me… each one came out negative. I didnt get my first positive until about two days after my missed period and it was VERY faint, I kept taking them for the next three days and they just kept getting darker and darker.
Now that Im ttc again, my period is due tomorrow or thursday, so I know EXACTLY how you feel about wanting to know right now.
I’d say wait a few days, it not only gets expensive, but looking at a negative tests really sucks
    Good luck!!

  6. Trophy Wife + bun Says:

The chances are really good! Mine came up positive 4 days before and I didn’t even have any symptoms except occasional dizziness and being tired. So if you are having symptoms you probably have enough HCG to test positive. If you are positive then you need to come back and post so we can officially congratulate you!
PS: I got the 3 pack of first response tests from Walmart. It was only 9 dollars for 3 tests. Only ended up needing one.

  7. Frann(: Says:

You can buy a First Responce pregnancy test that work 4-6 days before your period is due depending on what test you buy.
However, altho it does work 4-6 days before the results will be more definate the closer to the date you get however, it should give you the result your after :)

I know it’s really tempting but if it’s a BFN you’ll be really disapointed, then perk up cos you’ll know it’s early, then might go through the disapointment again next week. I’ve given up testing unless I’m a week late cos I hate the disapointment

  9. Priscilla 84 Says:

It all depends on your Hcg level.. If you take a test now, try the clearblue pg test.. They’re pretty good.. And try to hold tight until the first morning urine.. That’s when it should be highest.. A test MIGHT come out never now.. Good luck & *~>< < Lots of Baby Dust >><~*

  10. LBB Says:

well it depends which you would find harder
dealing with a negative test (false or not)
or waiting a few days to be more sure

  11. Anonymous Says:

do a first response, those say you can do them 5 days before your missed period.
    Good Luck!!

  12. dskbm200 Says:

  14. sweetie Says:

It took home test til I was 9 weeks to show up but if you go have a blood test done then it would tell you for sure. Good luck!

  15. mamacita Says:

your chances are 50/50. You either are, or you aren’t. If you have pregnancy hormone it may show up with an early preg test.

  16. Miss.Ind Says:

    i think you should wait
because it wont be 100% acurate
but if you feel the need to try
    just try
you never know what may happen
    good luck

  17. tkd chick Says:

You have to wait if you want an accurate result. The best thing to do is forget about it until then. No one gets by the dreaded two week wait..Best of Luck!!

  18. Anonymous Says:

Increase the amount of sexual partners you sleep with !!!

  19. Anonymous Says:

if you have money to waste buy one of those expensive early predictive tests, if you really really cant wait

  20. fellow_c Says:

Well, there are the over the counter tests that “say” they can detect pregnancy up to 3-4 days before your period is even due… Don’t buy it really… If you look at the small print on the tests they give the actual accuracy of the tests that far ahead, its something like 56% 4 days before, and increases from there.
I know how excited you are and how you are dying to find out, I have been there so many times in the past 7 years. However, I really suggest you wait until the day before or the day of your expected period. That way your results will be more accurate and it won’t leave you wondering.
ALSO, when you take a pregnancy test, be sure to use your first mornings urine, make sure you haven’t used the bathroom for at least 3-4 hours prior to testing. This will allow the concentration of HCG (what the test checks for) in your urine to be greater, therefore producing a more accurate result.
However, if you get a negative test one day before or on the day of your period and you still haven’t started a few days later, take another. Some women experience lower than normal HCG levels in early pregnancy… you they may actually be pregnant but their levels weren’t high enough for the test to capture.
If you’re really excited you could go to the doctor and ask for a Beta HCG. This is a blood test that is MUCH more sensitive and accurate. Some doctors won’t perform this test until the day your period is due, some won’t perform it at all… Just depends on the doctor. It won’t hurt to ask because it is a very accurate test to see if you are PG.
    GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!
