Is The Pregnancy Considered High Risk Just Because The Girl Is Overweight?

I have a friend who is about 100 pounds overweight and people at work are gossiping that her pregnancy is considered high risk and say she will have to have a C-Section just because of the weight but I never heard her or anyone in her family say that. Is that true or just dumb gossip? How should I respond when they say something like that?

No the weight doesn’t cause that itself. You can have problems associated with weight that could put you at risk but I myself am probably about 80 lbs over my ideal weight and have been since gaining it during and after my first pregnancy. I have had two full pregnancies since then and am currently 25weeks pregnant with my fifth (I did miscarry one at 17weeks but he had gotten a knot in his umbilical cord so that wasn’t weight related either). I had my first three all natural and plan on this one being that way too. The only thing the weight can do is put you at risk for more things that will then make you high risk but if she was high risk she probably would have mentioned this to her coworkers. If you want to say something I would say give her e break. Everyone has some kind of problems and hers may be her weight…..if you aren’t perfect you shouldn’t judge. Some people are happy being bigger and some have other stresses to worry about. I myself am not happy being big but I also feel that I have enough other stresses right now to not worry about my weight too. Personally I try not to talk about people and not to hang around those that do……you know they usually talk about EVERYONE just not when that person is near by.

Depending on how overweight a woman is the risks will vary. I know someone who is probably around 5 stone overweight and she had twins. She had gestational diabetes and had to have a c-section but that was her, that does not mean this will happen to every overweight pregnant woman. As for the gossip, I would research obesity, pregnancy and birth as much as you can and then you are able to set the record straight. Don’t be a b*tch about it, be honest. I think if it is malicious gossip then a certain amount of bluntness is required.
The person above me said something about the possibility of having a big baby because she’s overweight, it is not as far as I know the fact that you’re overweight that makes the baby larger than average. It is the risk of gestational diabetes that increases with obesity and this in turn can lead to a larger than average baby.

I would tell them to mind there own business. Yes overweight can be consider to be high risk because being over weight can cause allots of things like high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia and premature delivery climbed in tandem with a woman’s pre-pregnancy weight.
The researchers found that compared with normal-weight women, obese women were 50 percent more likely to have post-delivery bleeding and twice as likely to deliver prematurely. They were also more likely to need an emergency C-section or to have labor induced.
Doesnt mean it will happen its just a study and this is a site I found it on but people need to mind there own business.

I am currently pregnant with my second child and am obese. I am not considered high risk and won’t be unless problems occur. With my first child, I was average weight, but gained over 100 pounds during my pregnancy (due to unforeseen factors) and I had absolutely no problems with that pregnancy or his birth.
Just because a woman is overweight, doesn’t mean she will have problems. Yes, she would be at more of a risk for them, but there are many overweight women who are just as healthy as women who aren’t overweight. I myself have been told by many doctors that despite my weight, I am healthier than many people who are of an average size.
I would advise that you respond how you feel, but if it was me, I would say that someone’s weight doesn’t make them a free for all in gossip news and that as long as your friend is happy and does her best to do what the doctors tell her so that she can have a healthy pregnancy that is all that matters.

First of all…I would respond by telling people its pretty immature and rude to gossip about someone behind their back. Its not their business and its not their concern. A pregnancy isnt high risk just because you are overweight. I have a very overweight, pregnant friend and so far everything is just fine. She is not considered to be high risk. Now she may develop a condition that could make her high risk, but then again…so could I.

You’re not automatically high risk just b/c you’re overweight but it is true that overweight women (especially THAT overweight) will wind up having problems with the pregnancy that WILL make it high risk (such as pre eclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc.) and it’s true that obese women usually require a C-section.

  7. Hope Says:

just gossip, a pregnancy doesn’t become high risk unless theres a reason. with her being overweight it is more likely that she could become high risk, with gestational diabetes or high blood pressure or something like that. depending how her health was b4 she became pregnant. someone isn’t high risk just because of their weight.

She can still deliver naturally but she is considered High risk due to an increased chance of hypertension and diabetes. Try watching TLC or Discovery Health they have a show called “Obese and Pregnant” I just watched it this morning and it really gave me some insights into the world of obesity.

  9. Heaths Mommy Says:

Nope I’m overweight and im not high risk at all!! my friend is average size and shes high risk!!! I’ve had complications but nothing to do with weight.. can happen to anyone!! and i should not need a C section unless the baby is to big…which can be a worry with overweight women.. and as for the woman talking about the TLC show those people are like 350 pounds and over….

  10. Manda Says:

Obesity is a risk factor and does make your delivery high risk… not necessarily your whole pregnancy, but you are more likely to have complications in your delivery – whether vaginal or c-section – if you are obese.

Nope totally false! Im over weight and i had a normal pregnancy and normal birth. People are just stupid and immature! Respond by telling them to grow the hell up and act there age!!
