It depends on your local laws. It will range. The last county I lived in had a 3 day hold period. Where I live now it’s a week. Phone your local shelter or animal control and ask for an accurate response.

Our city holds the dogs for 5 days, then the shelters and breed rescues look over the dogs–mark the cages of the ones they’ll take (it’s determined by empty space at the shelter,if they’re full up nobody takes a dog) and they hold the dogs at the animal control for three more days as the dogs are being evaluated for temperment. Then they transfer them over to the shelter or to the rescues.
Unfortunately summer means all the cages are full at the shelter, and a lot of ‘good’ dogs are put to sleep. In Milwaukee it’s close to 10,000 dogs a year. That’s several hundred every month at animal control.

Well at the shelter near where I live if they dog comes in with a collar or microchip they give the owner a week and a half to claim there dog. But if the dog comes into the shelter without a collar or any microchip they are there for 4 days and on the 5th day they are put up for adoption.

It varies from shelter to shelter. The one in my county doesn’t have a time limit except they put animals down after 10 days if they haven’t found a home, others in neighboring counties wait 10 days before offering them up for adoption to make sure they are not sick or a danger to the public.
