Are There Any Adoption Or Rescue Agencies For Turtles In Illinois?

i am interested in getting a red-eared slider turtle. i have read that if you buy a turtle at a pet store that they are often sick and can die soon after even with proper care and that it is better to buy a turtle from a adoption or rescue agency, but i don’t know of any. if you know of one it would be of great help.

There are tons of red-eared sliders in rescue.. You could try the Mid Michigan Reptile Rescue. I had contacted them before to adopt a tortoise. They took about a week to respond, but, they were really nice and informative.. http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/disp…
Last I checked, you only had to pay for shipping for red-eared sliders rather then an adoption fee too. But, you can contact them for more info.
Other then that, you can try calling your local shelter and see if they have any in.

If you’re near Chicago, contact the Chicago Turtle Club http://www.geocities.com/~chicagoturtle/ and the Chicago Herpetological Society http://www.chicagoherp.org/. You can also try contacting any local zoos, because people often try to donate unwanted turtles to zoos, and the zoos often don’t want them.
    If you’re further south, try
    Mr. Michael Nesbit
    Central Illinois Herp Society
    801 W. Virginia Avenue
    Peoria, IL 61604
    267-3764
You can also try your local branches of the Animal Rescue League and the local animal control office (pound). Both sometimes have surrendered turtles, although not that often.
With most of these, it’s likely to be a case of putting your name on a waiting list for the next one that comes in. But, the CHS or CTC may have some that are already looking for homes.
